by Ginny Virginia is not new to artistic design, having been a published needlework designer as "Ginny's Stitchin's" for over 15 years. Thirteen years ago she discovered the wonderful world of glass beads and jewelry making. Now retired from her profession as an educator, she prefers to "work her bliss", creating unique one-of-a-kind jewelry. She continues to develop her skill in fused glass for jewelry as well as in off-loom bead weaving using seed beads, accent beads, Japanese delica beads and natural stone. While she sometimes incorporates handmade glass beads and pendants in her jewelry from well-known lampwork and fused glass bead artists, she prefers to concentrate on her own fused glass pieces using dichroic glass. She particularly enjoys being able to combine her fused glass with off-loom bead weaving into unique classic designs. She studied with Donna Milliron at Bennington College, Vermont in the summer of 1996, learning the techniques of pate de verre, fusing, and torch work after having taken an introductory class at Embellishment in Austin, Texas, in 1996. To stimulate creativity in off-loom bead weaving to incorporate into her jewelry designs, she studied with Carol Wilcox Wells in an intensive week in the fall of 1997. In October, 1998, she studied silversmithing with Bill Cody, at the 1998 SFMS William Holland Workshop in Young Harris, GA. She has traveled widely studying off-loom bead weaving techniques to broaden her skills and stimulate creativity, the last trip being to participate in Beadventure in Ireland with Cynthia Rutledge as world-class teacher. Virginia, ("Ginny" to her family and friends) lives in Newport News, Virginia, where she has her beadwork studio while she does fusing in her glass studio in Williamsburg, VA. She has been a participating artist in Blue Skies Gallery in Hampton, VA for eight years. Juried art shows include An Occasion for the Arts, (Williamsburg, VA) for three years (1999 - 2002), and the Junior Woman's Club of Williamsburg Annual Spring Art Show (2000 and 2003) where, in 2000, she received Honorable Mention in the 3-D Art category. Greenleaf Gallery, Duck, N.C., showed her work as part of their Glass Invitational, May-June, 2000. In addition to Blue Skies Gallery, Ginny's work can be seen at Jerry's Gallery (Deltaville), and Yates House Fine Arts & Crafts Gallery (Deltaville). Other juried shows include Art on the Square (the Williamsburg Jr. Women's Club), Bizarre Bazaar (Richmond), Holly Point Art & Seafood Festival, (Deltaville), the Virginia Beach Christmas Market, Cricket on the Hearth (Virginia Beach), The Williamsburg Christmas Market, and Art on the Half Shell, (Urbanna, VA). She is a charter member of the Bead Society of Southeastern Virginia organized in January, 1998, and a member of the International Society of Glass Beadmakers.

A brief story about the intricate piece pictured below: Ginny spent almost 9 months working on this piece, close to a total of 120 hours. It is all free-style beadweaving. Every year she designs one special piece as an "attention-getter" to her booth when doing shows, and this year, this was the one! She had it finished one week, took it to one show, and, needless to say, it was much too beautiful to go unnoticed! A delightful couple from New Jersey happened by her booth at this show, and you could tell the woman was in awe when looking at the necklace. She asked to try it on - and it looked as though it was made for her! It was their 20th wedding anniversary so the man asked her if she would like it...well, was there any question? He bought it and she adored it, and Ginny has wished them many, many more wonderful anniversaries. After all, that is what jewelry designers do - design gorgeous creations for that one person to find that a piece was "made for".
